Under the present first-past-the-post (FPTP) voting system, Greens ran a good race in the local elections earlier this month.
But Greens could have done even better under a fairer voting system that accurately reflected the opinions of voters.
Benali Hamdache, new Green councillor for Islington, told the Islington Tribune:
“[Under PR], we’d have something like six Lib Dems, six Conservatives, 11 Greens and 28 Labour councillors,” (rather than 0 Lib Dems, 0 Conservatives, 3 Greens and 48 labour councillors).
Benali believes PR will mean councils are better run, as they would be more reflective of the local people, as well as being more transparent
“Islington Council has been in an interesting situation for the last eight years, with 48 Labour councillors versus one Green.
“By having a more balanced council, we know we’d see a better run council…I think generally things are better-run when we have lots of different perspectives”
