New data shows Heathrow still breaching legal NO2 limits in 2030

“The Mayor needs to urgently reconsider the geographical range of his proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone” says Jenny Jones as roads surrounding Heathrow are predicted to not meet legal limits for NO2 by 2030, with 50 other London road locations also predicted to be over the limits by 2020.

New data released by DEFRA shows 50 London road locations with the highest concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) in 2013 still being be over legal limits in 2020. It also revealed that even at its current size, the roads around Heathrow will not meet legal limits for NO2 by 2030.

To illustrate the 50 London locations, Jenny Jones AM has produced a map ‘Where are the pollution hotspots’: http://www.howpollutedismyroad.org.uk/hotspots.php

Jenny Jones AM said:

“The case for the Government and Mayor of London to rethink and toughen up their policies on tackling older diesel cars and traffic reduction has grown even stronger. We need the rules sooner, stricter and bigger.”

“With Heathrow not expected to meet legal NO2 limits for the next 15 years, the Mayor needs to urgently reconsider the geographical range of his proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone, including areas such as Heathrow right from the start”

“This shows why the government can’t expand Heathrow because of the impacts on health. Expansion is a legal no go until they sort out the air pollution”
