Most cycling danger hotspots not on Boris Johnson’s list for immediate action

A recent list released by Aviva reveals the top 10 areas of casualties in London, with only one of them being addressed by the Mayor’s “Better Junction” scheme. Green Assembly Member calls the list indicative of how little the Mayor has achieved for safer roads and how much work is left to do for the next Mayor.

Aviva have published a list of the top 10 hotspots for casualties in London. Only the Elephant and Castle appears to overlap with the Mayor’s published list of Better Junction schemes that he aims to complete by 2016.

Other junctions on the hotspot list are receiving some treatment such as 20mph being brought in at Waterloo Roundabout and minor changes to the Grove Road/Mile End junction as part of the superhighway 2. However, these fall short of the engineering required to make major changes in safety.

Darren commented,

“This list of cycling casualty hotspots highlights how little Boris Johnson will have achieved for safer roads by the time he leaves office and how much needs to be done by the next Mayor. London is a big city and every delay in bringing forward Dutch style cycling facilities is leaving people vulnerable. It is incredible that after 6 years of delays, Transport for London are still underspending their cycling budget by tens of millions of pounds. Boris Johnson has got to focus on his job as Mayor and ensure that as many of the proposed safer cycling schemes actually happen before he leaves office.”
