Greens win in Highgate!

Lorna with Mayor of London candidate Zoë Garbett and Green Party leader Carla Denyer

Welcome London’s newest Green councillor, Cllr Lorna Jane Russell!

On Thursday 30th November, she won the Highgate by-election in Camden with a huge 59% of the vote, after Siân Berry stepped down in September to focus on becoming Brighton Pavillion’s next Green MP. She polled more than twice as many votes as Labour, a truly fantastic result!

This result, after our amazing showing in the Mayor of Hackney by-election just a few weeks ago, really shows just how much people trust Green candidates and believe in what the Greens can offer.

We’d like to offer a huge thanks to Siân for all her work as our councillor in Highgate from 2012-2023, and a similarly huge thanks to Benali Hamdache, Lorna’s campaign manager these last few months. And our final huge thanks goes to all who stepped up to help, whether knocking on doors, delivering leaflets, donating money or supporting us on social media.

Lorna said: “Throughout this campaign, many residents raised their disappointment with Keir Starmer’s leadership, in his own constituency. A lot of voters told me that they were enthused to have a positive Green alternative. This means a lot for Greens taking on Labour across the country.”
