Greens demand independent investigation into ‘partygate.’

The Green Party have launched a petition to enforce a “full, fair and truly independent investigation into Partygate.”

On 20th of May 2020, lockdown rules stated that nobody could leave their home without a reasonable excuse.

However, gathering took place in the garden of 10 Downing Street which the Prime Minister Boris Johnson attended. The invite suggested guests “bring their own booze.”

The investigation into breaches of Covid rule at Downing Street, is being led by senior civil servant Sue Gray.

The petition questions her appointment. “Can a civil servant, who is ultimately answerable to the Prime Minister, really be able to lead an independent inquiry? We believe that someone answerable to the Prime Minister cannot be impartial.”

The petition also challenges the impartiality of the Metropolitan Police – “How is it that the apparent breach of coronavirus regulations was able to take place in a building heavily guarded by the Metropolitan Police? Why hasn’t the Metropolitan Police investigated the previously leaked parties, such as the one on the 18thDecember 2020?’

Baroness Jenny Jones, a Green peer in the House of Lords, has written to Scotland Yard and the Independent Office of Police Conduct. As yet, they haven’t replied.
