Lambeth Greens have set out an ‘alternative budget’ for the London borough, after a disappointing budget by the ruling Labour group.
The Greens are proposing trialling universal basic income in Lambeth as well as piloting a four-day work week.
The existing budget makes no mention of the climate emergency, and the Green group are severely critical of the council’s housing plans, in particular its estate demolition programme.
The Greens say the programme ‘is both socially and environmentally damaging and now appears to produce no net increase in homes at council rent, despite the eye-watering cost and huge hardship inflicted on residents.’
Their calculations suggest that 3,000 extra council houses could be built without demolishing existing homes.
