EU commission censure won’t stop tax avoidance, says London Green MEP

Green MEP Jean Lambert supports the EFA group/Greens calls for a far-reaching inquiry into tax evasion across the EU, saying “while a forced resignation would certainly show our anger, a thorough, independent inquiry into tax evasion across Europe, followed by action, is what is required”.

Green MEP for London Jean Lambert reiterated her call for an enquiry into tax evasion, following the failed attempt to censure the EU Commissioner associated with multinational tax avoidance schemes.

The European Parliament today voted down not to censure the newly appointed Commission of Jean Claude Juncker. The vote was triggered by the so-called Luxleaks documents, revealing Junker’s association with tax avoidance schemes during his time as Luxembourg PM. The vote was called by the Euro-sceptic EFDD group in the Parliament and was backed by France’s Front National Party.

In response, the Greens/EFA group have developed a proposal to call for the establishment of a committee to carry out a far-reaching inquiry into tax evasion, not just related to Mr Juncker, but across the EU.

Jean Lambert, Green MEP for London, said:

‘Sacking the entire Commission might be provocative but wouldn’t actually get to the root of these problems.

‘If Mr Juncker resigns, the Commission stops but the financial problems don’t and we let others off the hook. While a forced resignation would certainly show our anger, a thorough, independent inquiry into tax evasion across Europe, followed by action, is what is required – not grandstanding’.
