Cyclist killed by HGV at junction TfL dropped from safety review

Green Assembly Member Darren Johnson calls for the Mayor to “take responsibility for getting London’s road network fit for cycling”

Despite six major injuries or fatalities between 2008 and 2012 the TfL decided to cancel the safety overhaul on this junction.

Darren Johnson AM has responded to the news of a cycling fatality in London this morning. The collision happened at 10am at Ludgate Circus junction in the City of Westminster. A male cyclist was involved in a collision with an HGV and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, a London Ambulance spokesperson said. This junction featured on TfL’s original list of 100 junctions which it planned to overhaul following safety concerns but TfL subsequently revised the list to 33 junctions and dropped Ludgate Circus from it.

Six cyclists were killed or seriously injured at this junction between 2008 and 2012 according to research by Darren Johnson AM. Darren Johnson commented:

“This absolutely tragic news is made all the more poignant by the fact that TfL recently decided to cancel the major safety overhaul it had deemed necessary at this blackspot.”

“Six cyclists were killed or seriously injured here in the space of five years yet despite this dreadful toll TfL aren’t going to get this junction sorted out. We are seeing this pattern of inaction all across the road network in London and it is unacceptable.”

“The Mayor as Chair of TfL has to show some leadership and take responsibility for getting London’s road network fit for cycling. It is terrible to think that we have to endure another decade of preventable casualties at this junction and many others which have been dropped from the Mayor’s list, because of the lack of money.”

“The Mayor must also ensure restrictions put on unsafe lorries are properly enforced and should urgently publish his review on a proposed peak time lorry ban.”

“Rolling out segregated cycle lanes and implementing measures like 20mph zones would also make our streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians.”
