Green Assembly Member Darren Johnson accuses Mayor Boris Johnson of “planning for a future where climate change doesn’t exist”.
Darren Johnson has responded to the Mayor’s plans for replacing Heathrow with a bigger airport in the Thames Estuary. The Mayor’s plans are launched on the same day as the latest report from the International Panel on Climate Change warn of the need to adapt to the increased risk of flooding and sea level rises.
Darren Johnson said:
“Heathrow has terrible environment impacts, including air pollution and noise, but the only credible solution is to reduce the total number of flights and not build new airports or new runways.”
“Today’s report from the IPCC makes nonsense of the Mayor’s plans for replacing Heathrow airport. What is the point of building a huge airport in the Thames Estuary flood plain and expanding the total number of flights and climate change emissions? The Mayor is planning for a future where climate change doesn’t exist and we don’t have to adapt to its impacts.”
