Mayor must continue drop in private car journeys

At tomorrow’s meeting of the London Assembly, where the Mayor faces questioning on his emerging policies for transport, economic development and planning, Jenny Jones will ask colleagues to join her in calling on Boris Johnson to set tough targets on cutting private car and motorbike journeys in London.

The motion that Jenny will put to the Assembly is as follows:

"This Assembly notes that London has achieved international acclaim for reducing private car and motorcycle traffic by 9% between 2000 and 2007, despite economic and population growth during that period. It notes that this traffic reduction was achieved by a mixture of carrot and stick measures, including large scale investment in public transport, walking and cycling. The Assembly calls on the Mayor to build on this by adopting clear and ambitious traffic reduction targets in his Transport Strategy."
