Greens warn – London needs more ambitious recycling plan

However, they argue that a much more ambitious approach is needed if we are to avoid the construction of more polluting incinerators in the capital.

Cllr. Darren Johnson AM, Leader of the Green Party Group in the London Assembly commented,
“Greens are giving the Mayor five out of ten for his waste strategy. Although favouring more recycling, Ken Livingstone has rejected the Greens’ proposal for a Zero Waste Strategy for London. New Zealand, Western Australia and California are all aiming for Zero Waste status by 2020. That means recycling or reusing everything, incinerating or landfilling nothing. Whilst the Mayor has publicly stated his opposition to incinerators, the Greens are concerned that he will be forced to backtrack as his waste strategy fails to cope with the deluge of waste and lack of landfill.”
