Planning rotters threaten Enfield’s rotifers, warn Greens

Cllr. Darren Johnson AM and Noel Lynch AM, Green Party members in the London Assembly, will be visiting the Dew Pond at Trent Country Park tomorrow to listen to the concerns of local people and give their support to local campaigners.

“The proposals by Middlesex University to build on this site are bad news for local wildlife and bad news for the local community. Green Belt land will be tarmaced over to impose a car park bang next to the Dew Pond,” warned Darren Johnson.

Commenting further, Noel Lynch added, “It is absolutely scandalous that the Dew Pond is under threat. Out of 26 North London urban ponds, the Dew Pond is a rarity, having the highest number of rotifer species. Trent Country Park is a conservation area and should be treated as such.

It is crucial to put up a vigorous fight against the constant threat to green space and wildlife. We have seen far too much conservation space being lost to development. It’s time to say enough is enough.”

The development itself consists of new buildings and a car park near the Dew Pond. More car parking spaces are being proposed to match the expansion in student places.

Local residents and the Greens are concerned that new buildings and increased student capacity will lead to greater traffic problems and an increase in commuting.

Although Greens are not against the expansion of the university, they keen to see other sites explored, such as the one in Tottenham, rather than building on green belt land.
