Boris Johnson asked about failure to pursue Lorry Company who employed banned driver who killed cyclist

Green Assembly Member Jenny Jones questions Boris Johnson on what actions is being taken by the MET “against the company and the licenced operator, who gave a job to Barry Meyer, despite him not having a valid HGV licence and a history of being banned on five previous occasions”.

Jenny Jones has asked Boris Johnson the following question for his Mayoral update at the start of tomorrow’s meeting (21st May) at City Hall.

“What action is being taken by the Metropolitan Police Service against the company and the licenced operator, who gave a job to Barry Meyer, despite him not having a valid HGV licence and a history of being banned on five previous occasions? When sentencing Mr Meyer, following the death of cyclist Alan Neve, the judge said “Heavens knows why the lorry owners let you drive that vehicle without checking that you had a valid licence.”

Jenny will press the Mayor on why the charge of “Manslaughter – gross negligence” has not been pursued. The owner of the lorry that killed 4 people in Bath earlier this year has been cautioned with a charge of manslaughter.

The Traffic Commissioner for London and the South East is calling the lorry operator and transport manager in for an inquiry. There will be a preliminary hearing on June 4 followed by an inquiry sometime in June.

This follows the Met Police failure to bring a prosecution against the driver who killed cyclist Michael Mason, last year.
