Women across London will find true inspiration this weekend at the annual Capital Woman conference, where London’s Green MEP, Jean Lambert, will be chairing a debate on health and tackling inequality across the city. The event, which is taking place on Saturday 8th March, marks International Women’s Day.
Having been London’s Green MEP since 1999, Jean Lambert is one of London’s leading women. This is the second year that she has been involved with the Capital Woman conference, which provides a unique opportunity for London’s women to have a direct dialogue with the Mayor on issues of priority in their lives. This year will celebrate the contribution made by women from London’s diverse communities and is particularly aimed at engaging young women.
Jean Lambert MEP, who will be chairing the debate on health, said:
"Health is of primary concern to us all. However, while life expectancy has increased over the whole population the gap between the best and worst local authority areas has widened. Research also shows that in the most deprived areas there are far worse environmental conditions and this has a significant impact on health.
"In London, there are considerable inequalities in life expectancy. For example, within the borough of Camden life expectancy at birth for males ranges from 70 years in St Pancras to 81 years in Hampstead. On average for every mile you travel east from Westminster life expectancy decreases by one year. The debate today will explore how we can tackle this disparity."
The Capital Woman 2008 event takes place tomorrow from 9am – 5.30pm at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre and Central Hall Westminster. Jean lambert will be chairing the session on health inequalities from 3.00pm-4.20pm at the Elizabeth Windsor Room, 5th floor, QEII Conference Centre.
The conference will include information sessions on a wide range of issues from cycle maintenance to basic plumbing and from public speaking to careers in fashion. For more information go to www.london.gov.uk
