Community leaders speak out against the BNP

London MEP, Jean Lambert, will tonight be joining other politicians, faith leaders, trade unionists and community workers to encourage people to use their vote in the London elections to prevent the BNP from gaining a seat on the London Assembly. There is a clear threat that the party could gain 5 per cent of the vote this year which would give them a seat on the Assembly.

Speakers will include Lee Scott MP, Mike Gapes MP, Jean Lambert MEP, faith leaders, trade unionists, community and youth workers. The meeting will take place at The Lambourne Room, Ilford Town Hall, Ilford High Road from 7.30 – 10pm on Thursday 17th April.

Jean Lambert, MEP for London and a member of the Anti-Racism cross-party group in the European Parliament, said:

“The BNP should not be given a voice in London because our politicians must represent the interests of everyone who lives and works here. What London needs is social inclusion not division.

“London has suffered from the problems associated with social deprivation and poverty for a very long time. You don’t solve those issues by turning to simplistic politics of hatred.

“The rise of these groups is a grave issue across Europe, but there is a strong fight back taking place against the far-right in favour of progressive parties.”
