Jenny Jones AM has published an amendment to be tabled at the London Assembly meeting on Wednesday 29th January, which proposes to increase TfL’s cycling budget to two per cent of their total budget. This follows the formula recommended by the Assembly’s Transport Committee in its 2012 report Gearing Up. The extra £66m would ensure that TfL deliver the Mayor’s cycling vision, addressing funding shortages in three key programmes:

Cycle Superhighways: the standard of the programme has been improved, but TfL say the extra costs could lead to the length or number of the routes being curtailed, so this amendment will ensure the full network is delivered to a high standard

Mini Hollands: the small ambition of the programme could leave most of outer London untouched, missing the potential for at least one million cycling journeys, so this amendment will realise the huge potential for cycling in outer London.

Better Junctions: the programme identified 100 junctions responsible for 302 serious injuries and fatalities in recent years, but 67 will be untouched by the Mayor’s plans, so this amendment will make sure that more dangerous junctions are redesigned.

Jenny commented, “The Mayor has raised expectations with his ambitious cycling vision, but TfL are failing to match this with the right level of investment. Last year the Assembly convinced him to slightly increase his cycling budget through this process, this year I hope we can persuade him that his manifesto promises are at risk if he doesn’t put his money where his mouth is.“
