At the end of 2010 Lambeth Council said it aspired to have a 20mph borough-wide limit. It then appeared to change its mind in 2012 but after campaigning by the Green Party recommitted to it in 2013. The Labour Party amended a council motion in July 2014 tabled by the Green Party, removing all references to a timetable for implementing a 20mph limit.
The call comes after two more fatalities in Streatham in the space of 48 hours. The collisions happened on Red Routes overseen by Transport for London. TfL say they are waiting on the implementation of a 20 mph borough-wide limit by Lambeth Council before they can consider such limits for main roads.

The latest figures show that more people are dying in Lambeth from road traffic collisions than anywhere else in London, making it London’s deadliest borough. Lambeth also has the second worst figures for serious injuries.
Campaigner and Green Party Parliamentary candidate for Streatham Jonathan Bartley said: “Lambeth Council’s commitment to a 20mph limit appears to be empty. The Council seems complacent as the lives of more and more families are destroyed in road traffic collisions.
“The Council has the power and influence to make Lambeth safer through a 20mph borough-wide limit. The evidence is absolutely clear about the benefits of 20mph limits. Everyone is waiting on Lambeth to act, including Transport for London. Dozens of other Local Authorities have gone ahead and done it. Why won’t Lambeth set a timetable?”
