Boris back-tracks on ‘beautiful London’

Responding to reports of the Mayor of London’s decision to drop aprogramme which would have seen the transformation of 100 publicspaces in London, Jenny Jones, Green Party London Assembly Member, hasaccused Boris Johnson of back-tracking.

"In the introduction to his environment manifesto, the Mayor said thathe would ‘nurture and protect the public spaces that bind us alltogether’. Scrapping the very programme that was working to achievethis directly contradicts his own manifesto."

"The best example of improving London’s pubic spaces is TrafalgarSquare, which was transformed from a famous monument on a trafficisland into a well used and loved place to be. The aim was to deliverthis kind of change across London. But now schemes that the previousMayor agreed to in my budget deal with him, including Tottenham Hale,Victoria Embankment, and Woolwich town centre, may not happen."

The forward to Boris Johnson’s Environment manifesto concludes:

"Above all I will work to make London a pleasant and saef place tolive, by nuturing and protecting the public spaces that bind ustogether."
