Amnesty for London’s irregular migrants

Darren Johnson will tomorrow ask the London Assembly to support his
call to allow migrants who have been living or working in London for
at least four years without permission to be given the chance to
become citizens.

"It has been estimated that an amnesty like this could save Londoners
many hundreds of millions of pounds. That, along with the virtual
impossibility of deporting all irregular migrants, means that a
one-off regularisation of unregistered workers and residents is the
only sensible solution."

"That is why I am asking London’s Mayor to lobby government for action
to turn London’s strangers into citizens. Tomorrow, I hope to get the
backing of the whole London Assembly."
