Speed limiter breakthrough

Jenny Jones has welcomed the announcement that the Transport for London trial of Intelligent Speed Adaptation in a bus and black cab is going ahead. Plans for the trial were originally agreed in January 2008 in a letter outlining budget proposals from previous London Mayor, Ken Livingstone to Jenny Jones, which included this commitment:

Conduct pilot of Intelligent Speed Adaptation of cars, buses, taxis, and other public service vehicles.

Jenny Jones, Green Party Member of the London Assembly said:

"If these trials are successful then these devices should be fitted to every bus and public service vehicle in London. The aim is to create a critical mass of vehicles on the main road network which can only drive at the legal speed limit. This would then slow everyone else down and enforce the speed limit throughout London’s main roads. The technology should also be offered to London’s 40,000 mini-cab drivers in return for a discount on their licence fee. The London Mayor should also try to broker deals with insurance companies, so that young drivers get discounts on their insurance in return to having these devices fitted."
