Mayor’s transport goals for outer London, climate change and overcrowding at risk

Jenny Jones has written to the London Mayor responding to the Transport Statement of Intent. Jenny said:

"Most of the Mayor’s key goals will only be achieved with bold new ideas and a large increase in investment. For example, the expansion of cycling and walking in outer London is completely under-funded, yet that is where three quarters of the Mayor’s target group of potential new cyclists live."

"As London’s population continues to grow, there is a large gap between the projected demand for travel and Transport for London’s ability to supply new infrastructure. The result of the Mayor cancelling tram, rail and bus schemes will be more overcrowding, congestion and pollution. Whilst I welcome the strong emphasis the Mayor has placed on reducing demand by reducing the need to travel. This will only be achieved by substantially expanding investment in demand management measures such as car clubs and workplace travel plans."

"The biggest challenge in drafting the Transport Strategy will be reducing CO2 emissions by 50% by 2025, when all the billions of pounds on new infrastructure such as Crossrail and upgrading the tube only reduce emissions by 10%, by 2018. The Mayor’s current set of ideas either lack ambition or specific goals. There is nothing on traffic reduction, despite it being one of London’s big success stories of recent years. Nor are there dates for when the Mayor will reach his target of all buses being hybrids and there being a 100,000 electric vehicles on London’s roads".
