The Green Party of England and Wales has voted overwhelmingly to back calls for a 15 percent pay-rise for NHS health and care workers.
It was the result of a motion brought by Green Party candidate for Sheffield City Council Rebecca Mulvaney at the recent spring party conference.
This was after the government announced its recommendation of a 1% pay-rise for NHS staff, which in real terms amounts to a pay cut when factoring in inflation.
Green Party co-leader Jonathan Bartley said the figure of 1 percent is:
‘…an insult to the nurses and other NHS staff who have risked their lives over the past year in order to protect us all and care for those who have needed it’.
Mulvaney’s motion supported GMB and Unite’s call for a 15 percent pay-rise.
There has been widespread condemnation from NHS staff, the public as well as trade unions, and now with suggestions the Royal College of Nursing union may take strike action.
