Sian Berry, Green candidate for Mayor, has promised to protect the Green Belt as it is ‘under threat’ according to a report by The London Green Belt Council. ‘My plan to gold plate our Green Belt means working with surrounding councils to improve and protect it’ explained Sian.
The report’s findings show the ring of protected countryside around London, put in place over 70 years ago to control urban growth, is shrinking: ‘In the last four years the number of sites in the London Metropolitan Green Belt that have been offered up for new housing has trebled’.
As well as banning development, Sian’s gold-plated plans to protect the countryside around London include planting new woodland, installing flood prevention measures, working with farmers to increase food production and making the Green Belt more accessible to Londoners.
Sian says: ‘No Mayor has yet made a coherent plan to value and support the Green Belt. Greens will turn our city limits into a treasure all Londoners can benefit from’.
