Mayoral projections estimate that manufacturing will have disappeared from London by 2062, but at the current rate it will have disappeared in half the time. London Green Assembly Member Jenny Jones hit back saying “London’s flourishing manufacturing base is being squeezed out by the Mayor, who is in the pocket of big property developers”.
A new report to be published tomorrow by Jenny Jones AM will raise the alarm about the loss of industrial land in London, and the Mayor’s projections that could see manufacturing disappear completely from London by 2062. In the past decade industrial land has been converted to other uses, mainly residential, at twice the rate planned for in the Mayor’s London Plan.
Green Assembly Member Jenny Jones speaks out against the loss of industrial land, saying “London can’t just be a city of accountants and cleaners”.
Jenny’s report argues that this is driving viable businesses out, causing a loss of skilled and semi-skilled manual jobs and undermining the foundations of the capital’s economy. It includes case studies of businesses in Hackney Wick, Charlton and Peckham that she visited in drawing together her report.
London Assembly Member Jenny Jones AM said:
“London’s flourishing manufacturing base is being squeezed out by the Mayor, who is in the pocket of big property developers. I’ve talked to viable businesses like brewers, bespoke makers and aerospace manufacturers that are threatened by the rush to build flats.
“The Mayor has to look again at the huge and ongoing loss of industrial land, which he and the government want to push further. London can’t just be a city of accountants and cleaners, we need decent manual jobs that keep the city ticking over and we should be making more in London, not less.”
