Mayor must “come clean about Crystal Palace and back community-led approach”

The Mayor needs to review his general approach to the Crystal Palace area says Green Assembly Member Darren Johnson, who calls for Boris Johnson to publish briefs given to consultants and support a community-led approach.

Darren Johnson AM has called for the Mayor of London to publish briefs given to consultants that are studying the future of the National Sports Centre and the wider Crystal Palace area, following lobbying from constituents. He has also called on the Mayor to review his general approach to the Crystal Palace area following these projects, the proposed commercial development on Crystal Palace Park by ZhongRong Group, and other plans from the GLA and TfL.

Darren commented, “I’ve heard from countless angry residents who feel that the Mayor is imposing one flawed grand project after another on them, with no coherent vision for Crystal Palace Park or the wider area.

“He should publish the briefs he is giving to consultants to reshape the area, and come clean about how plans to demolish the athletics facilities, build a major commercial development on the park’s hill top, and regenerate the area relate to one another.

“The Mayor could get much more done in the area, and win the support of energetic and talented residents and businesses, if he backed a community-led approach. For example, he could support the plans for a new Neighbourhood Forum, which could review his various plans and develop a more coherent plan.”
