Caroline Allen MEP candidate reports on her visit to Battersea Dog’s and Cat’s Home

Jean Lambert, London’s Green MEP was joined by vet, Green party Animal Spokesperson and London Euro canaidate Caroline Allen on a visit to Battersea Dog’s and Cat’s Home yesterday. They were invited there to see the work they do and discuss the issues that underlie the crisis of pet over population and resulting welfare issue. Green Party MEP candidate Caroline Allen gave this report on the visit:

Battersea do impressive work, never turning an animal away and taking on around 6000 dogs per year. They are currently struggling with old, unsuitable buildings but are in the middle of an expansion plan which will significantly improve the accommodation available. In spite of the surroundings the commitment and caring from the staff and volunteers was very evident. They are also doing great community work to change attitudes around ‘status dogs’.

Greens understand that breed specific legislation (the Dangerous Dog Act) has failed and that we need much stronger legislation around dog breeding and selling to tackle the epidemic of dog abandonment. Compulsory microchipping is just the start. As the Battersea Public Affairs Manager, Michael Webb, explained action at a European level is required to deal with puppy farming and over breeding as this is now an international trade.

Greens recognise this and our Animal Manifesto contains pledges for action on companion issues at a European levels.

As a vet Caroline has campaigned for compulsory microchipping and against puppy farms. At the moment she is highlighting the issue of illegal imports of puppies and the risk of rabies (albeit small) that come along with this trade. It is a scandal that Defra are leaving this to the ferry companies and Trading Standards to try and deal with this, a massive dereliction of duty.

As Michael said it would be great if one day the facilities at Battersea weren’t needed any more, unfortunately we need a big change in how we approach our relationship with ‘man’s best friend’ before this happens.
