Over 5,000 car park space in Earls Court plans is “madness”

Redevelopment plans for Earls Court will see an extra 1,977 parking spaces being made available – despite the fact the area exceeded it legal Nitrogen Dioxide limits last year.

According to Transport for London, the total number of car park spaces planned for the Earl’s Court redevelopment proposals will be 5,124. This is 1,977 more than the existing parking available across the Earls Court redevelopment plan area.

Last year Earl’s Court exceeded its annual legal limits for the harmful to human health vehicle emission Nitrogen Dioxide 308 times, raising concerns this will encourage more traffic and increase air pollution in this designated Air Quality Management Area. London Green Party Assembly Member Darren Johnson urged the Mayor of London to direct refusal to this application which is expected to be imminently referred back to the Mayor for his final decision.

“Earl’s Court already suffers from illegal levels of vehicle pollution. Designing in almost 2,000 more car park spaces is madness. It will bring extra traffic into this highly congested area, generating further pollution and more misery for asthma sufferers and other vulnerable residents with respiratory diseases”

“The expectation that newer diesel vehicles will have cleaner emissions have been undermined by government research showing in many cases the opposite, undermining many of the Mayor of London’s assumptions for tackling air quality. This should be a major consideration for the Mayor’s final decision”
