Jenny Jones to ask the Mayor to introduce compulsory youth engagement training for all new police recruits

Jenny Jones AM will question the Mayor of London to introduce compulsory youth engagement training for all new police recruits at Mayor’s Question Time at City Hall on Wednesday 19th June at 10am. Jenny has tabled the following question:

Youth engagement training for police recruits

Question No: 1879 / 2013

Jenny Jones

Will you introduce a compulsory youth engagement training module for all new police recruits?

Jenny published a report earlier in the year which found there is a trust problem between young Londoners and the Metropolitan Police Service. The report followed a series of visits Jenny had been on to meet with young people. One of the report’s recommendations was to introduce a compulsory youth engagement training module for all new police recruits.

A poll last year for the Safer London Foundation, conducted by YouGov, found half of young people in London questioned said relations between young people and the police were negative, compared to only 17% saying that it was positive. The poll also found three quarters of those surveyed felt if the relationship with the police improved, young people would be more likely to report crime. They also felt it was important to improve relations with the police.
