Mayor’s electric car ambitions fall flat

According to latest DVLA figures, the total number of electric cars, light and heavy goods vehicles registered in London is 1,632. The Mayor’s aspiration is for a 100,000 electric vehicles in London by 2020.

London Assembly Member Jenny Jones said: “These figures show that Mayor is a long way from achieving his ambition to make London the electric car capital of Europe, which he announced with a big fanfare in 2009. He has scaled back his ambition of delivering 25,000 electric vehicle charging points and has now appears to have given up on the idea by outsourcing the current network of 1,300.

The Mayor used to claim that cleaner vehicles were the solution, but all the evidence now points to a huge growth in dirty diesel, whilst his electric vehicle ambitions have fallen flat. He needs to commit to traffic reduction and to start focusing resources on encouraging electric buses and delivery vehicles.”
