Green Party candidate Andrew Child has thanked volunteers for their support after taking second place in Brixton Hill’s local council by-election.
The by-election was called after the resignation of Labour’s Steve Reed, who left the post after winning a parliamentary by-election in Croydon North. The seat was won by Labour’s Martin Tiedemann, with Green Party candidate Andrew Child polling second ahead of Liberal Democrat, Conservative and UKIP candidates.
Andrew said:”I’m delighted with this result which confirms the Greens as the second placed party in Brixton Hill and the only real alternative to Labour.”
“The hard work of activists really made the difference and there are many people can take pride in the result. As always it is a collective achievement. We have a great platform now from which to challenge for seats on the council here in 2014. When people are made aware that there’s a real alternative to an unprincipled Labour Party in the area they choose to vote Green. That knowledge can give us a real confidence going forward. I’ve never felt more proud to be Green.”
“I was grateful to receive help from many volunteers from inside and outside the party, both locally and from across London. A very special thanks must go to Training Officer Caroline Russell, and London Election Agent Jon Nott who have been down here every weekend recently. I’m most grateful though to Bridget Chapman, my friend and colleague in the Lambeth Green Party who has been out on the streets with me almost every day for the last few weeks. I’ve learnt everything I know about campaigning from Bridget.”
