Green Party leader Natalie Bennett will be addressing crowds at the National Climate March, travelling from Grosvenor Square to the Houses of Parliament on Saturday 1st December – midway through the UN Doha Climate Change Conference (COP 18).
Natalie Bennett said: “Understanding of the need for urgent, determined and clear action to dramatically reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases is now widespread – among the public, among businesses, and among international organisations.
“The missing links are government, which have failed to show understanding of the need for action or the resolution to act. Sadly the British government is one of the standout examples of that failure – the ‘greenest government ever’ pledge is now a horrifyingly sick joke.”
The march, organised by the Campaign against Climate Change, will feature the building of a mock ‘Keystone pipeline’ from the Canadian High Commission to the US embassy, and a giant mock fracking rig outside of Parliament.
The demonstration comes at a critical time, with construction on the southern half of the Keystone XL pipeline going ahead, which would greatly increase US crude oil imports. Meanwhile the UK government is pressing ahead with its ‘dash for gas’ – which would pave the way for greater carbon emissions as well as the environmentally unsound practise of hydraulic fracturing, also known as ‘fracking’ for gas.
Natalie said: “We need an Energy Act that provides a stable, certain future for the renewable energy technologies that can meet our future needs within our emissions limits; we need a commitment to a healthy, varied economy that brings manufacturing and food production back to Britain, shortening supply chains and carbon emissions.”
