Cyclists & pedestrians must be given priority in review of dangerous junctions

Jenny Jones has responded to the Mayor’s review of ‘challenging’ junctions for cyclists, by calling for the Mayor to reinstate the principle that priority should be given to vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, the less able bodied and cyclists. This approach was abandoned by the current Mayor when he rewrote the London Plan.

The Mayor’s revised cycle safety plan comes after Jenny published statistics showing that whilst cycling is safer than it was in 2000, it is not safer than it was in 2007/08.

Jenny Jones has responded:

"We know that cycle safety is the big problem which puts Londoners off jumping on their bikes and this review of challenging junctions is something which the London Assembly has been pressing the Mayor to carry out. However, the review will not make the street safer unless the Mayor tells his engineers that cyclists and pedestrians come first. I am worried that the Mayor’s policy of smoothing traffic flow is saving time for some people, by putting the lives of others in danger. I will be making these points when I respond to the forthcoming consultation on the Mayor’s Road Safety strategy."
