London wide rise in youth unemployment

Youth unemployment in London has jumped by more than 26,000 since 2008, according to a recent study. The number of young people claiming jobseeker’s allowance has also increased in every London borough.

Figures show the number of 16-24 year olds claiming jobseeker’s allowance rose from 32,945 at the start of 2008, to 59,325 in October this year. Tower Hamlets had the highest number of claimants, followed by Newham and Croydon.

Darren Johnson AM said:

"We are witnessing an appalling waste of young Londoners’ lives. The Mayor has to take more action to help young Londoners."

"Nearly half the apprenticeships in the Greater London Authority Group last year went to people aged 25 and over. But the Mayor should be aiming these towards the 16-24 age group, helping young people break into their first career."
