Doubts raised over Mayor’s floating walkway for Olympics

The Mayor of London’s announcement to build a ‘spectacular kilometre long floating river walk along the north bank of the River Thames in time for summer 2012′ is in question following a press investigation into the financial credibility of Venus Group, the backers of the £60m walkway.

London Assembly Member Darren Johnson has sought clarification on key safety issues in written questions to the Mayor of London.

The pedestrian walkway would be very close to the Walkbrook Wharf Waste Transfer Station where waste barges operate and transfer 30,000 tonnes of waste into barges each year.

Darren Johnson said: "It is surprising that the Mayor was able to announce earlier this year that a kilometre long walkway would be delivered by the time of the Olympics, when he is still seeking clarification over basic safety considerations. There are also doubts being expressed about whether he made sufficient checks on the financial backer.

"The walkway is a great idea in principle and would be a welcome attraction to the capital, but this project is once again raising serious questions about the Mayor’s promises and his judgement."
