Green MEP for London, Jean Lambert, has welcomed the news that the Ugandan Parliament has dropped its odious Anti-Homosexuality Bill following an outpouring of international condemnation. The draft legislation would have seen the introduction of the death penalty and life imprisonment for those convicted.
Jean, a member of the European Parliament Gay and Lesbian Intergroup, said: "This welcome news is a real victory for the millions of people from around the world who stood together and faced down this hateful piece of legislation. By seeking to criminalise people’s sexual orientation, the bill went against the most fundamental principles of human rights and democracy. As a member of the international community, it is the duty of the Ugandan government to safeguard the rights of all its people, regardless of sexual orientation and without exception.
"Whilst today gives cause for celebration, it’s important to remember that the fight is not over – the proposals could be easily reintroduced in the next Parliamentary session. The bill serves as a reminder of the terrible injustices that LGBT people all over the world face each day and it is up to us to exert pressure on leaders at all levels to end the heinous persecution which stems from homophobia for good."
