Fare rises and missed opportunities

The Mayor of London has published his budget for the Greater London Authority and functional bodies 2011/12. Jenny Jones, Green Party member of the GLA said:

"The Mayor has let Londoners down in this budget. First Londoners face a rise in public transport fares of 7% from January, well above inflation at a time when many have frozen pay packets or expect redundancy.

"Secondly, the Mayor has failed to drive urgent and far reaching reforms to reap large potential savings, for example, missing the opportunity to slash the huge police overtime bill.

"Thirdly, the Mayor has so far failed to secure money from government to ensure that vital projects go ahead, such as work to make London’s homes warmer and cheaper to heat, and measures to clean up London’s dirty air. This is a poor value budget for Londoners."
