A video looking at the promises to deliver high animal welfare standards in the Food Strategy for the London 2012 Games and how they compare to the current sourcing standards for chicken has been produced by London Assembly Member Jenny Jones. According to the Games Food Strategy most of the thirty one tonnes of poultry items that will be served in the Olympic Village will be limited to British Red Tractor assured.
Jenny Jones said: "It is exasperating that the 2012 strategy has failed so badly in animal welfare standards. It is important to specify, as an absolute minimum, that all chicken at the Games are free range or RSPCA Freedom Food certified.
"This is about ensuring that chickens are treated well and raised close to their natural behaviour, which means having adequate space, space to perch, nest, exercise, dustbathe and forage."
