At September’s full Council meeting, the Labour group in Hackney proposed a motion congratulating the Labour government on its investment in the Building Schools for the Future programme, and berating the likely cuts in education spending by a future Tory government.
Hackney Green Cllr Mischa Borris abstained in the vote. She commented, "Of course the Green Party advocates public investment in Hackney schools as a key priority."
"This motion was pure political posturing by the Labour administration. It did not commit the Council to do anything, nor will it bring in a penny more of investment into Hackney’s schools."
"Hackney needs high quality local schooling which is publicly funded and, crucially, publicly controlled and run, and democratically accountable at local authority level. Rather than raising a critical voice with national government over these issues, Hackney Labour simply offers pointless praise."
"I abstained because I could not support a Labour motion which will do nothing for students in Hackney."
