In an analysis done by Protecting Animals in Democracy, Jean Lambert, London’s Green MEP, scored joint best amongst UK MEPs on animal rights.
Jean, along with Caroline Lucas (Green, South East England) and Jill Evans (Plaid Cymru, Wales) received a score of +15.
The analysis was based on votes on the 5th of May on a new EU law on animal experiments. 15 votes taken into account for the analysis.
The Conservative Party scored the worst, with a score of -13.07. UKIP was 2nd worst amongst political parties from England and Wales, at +1.38. The Euro-manifestos for Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives do not mention animal protection as an issue at all.
Jean Lambert, the Green Party MEP for London, said:
"The Green Group in the European Parliament has been at the forefront of campaigning to make animal rights a priority in European institutions. We are the only party that can be trusted to vote for measures that will enhance animal protection, and I am proud of our record."
"The Greens have pushed for legislation to ban battery cages and most recently successfully secured Parliamentary support for a ban on the seal products trade in the EU."
"However, we were extremely disappointed by the European Parliament vote earlier this month on animal experiments. A number of critical amendments tabled by the Greens, that could have secured major improvements for animals, were rejected by a majority of MEPs from other parties."
"This survey unequivocally demonstrates that we are the only party you can count on to advance animal protection measures and, if re-elected to the Parliament on 4th June, Caroline and I will continue with this vital work."
