Victory for Queens Market

The decision by Boris Johnson to turn down the planning application submitted by Newham Council to redevelop Queens Market in Newham has been applauded by Jenny Jones, a long standing supporter of this market and opponent of the proposed development.

Queens Market is one of London’s most multicultural markets and was a recent runner up of BBC Radio Four’s Food & Farming Award for best food market in the UK.

On Boris Johnson’s decision, Jenny Jones said:
"It’s a real relief that the Mayor has rejected this proposal to reduce one of the most popular local markets in London. Boris should have rejected this on the basis of protecting the market, not on the size of the towers. However, I applaud the outcome"

On protecting street markets, Jenny Jones said:
"The London Mayor needs now to provide a vision for London’s local markets and stronger planning policies to guarantee their long term
future. The markets should become highly visible and attractive features of town centres, and also in areas without many fresh food shops".

"Street markets offer high quality affordable food and other goods, tailored to the needs and incomes of local residents, especially in areas lacking fresh food shops. They can improve the vibrancy of high streets and compete with chain stores."

Editors’ Notes

1. Jenny is available for interview.

2. According to the London Assembly’s Economic Development, Culture, Sport and Tourism Committee investigation into Street Markets ‘London Street Markets’ report, fifteen borough-managed street markets have closed down in the last ten years, and others are under threat.
