Darren Johnson has called for the Olympic Village to be zero carbon and built to the highest environmental standards. Darren was responding to the news that the London 2012 Olympic Village is now publicly owned after the Government confirmed that a further GBP324 million of public money has had to be pumped into the project.
Darren Johnson said:
"If the public is paying for the Olympic Village then it should be a showcase for green design, and the future of building in London. To have only 20% of energy generated at the Olympic Village by renewable energy is ridiculously unambitious. There is already one zero carbon development being built in Newham, which shows what the new standard should be.
"The plans for a giant wind turbine are great, but it shouldn’t let them off the hook with making the whole Olympics zero carbon. If the Olympic village is anything less than zero carbon, then I don’t feel that they will be living up to the spirit of their promise that this will be the greenest games ever."
