Green MEP joins major convention on modern liberties

Jean Lambert, London’s Green Party MEP, will be among speakers at a major event on modern liberties this weekend.

The Convention on Modern Liberty, taking place this Saturday [February
28] in London with parallel regional and national meetings in cities
across the UK, aims to stimulate open-minded discussion of civil
liberties and democracy.

openDemocracy, NO2ID, Liberty and the Guardian newspaper are among the
organisations leading and sponsoring the event, but it will bring
together people from across the political spectrum to debate the crisis
in civil liberties in the wake of a decade of Government legislation
restricting rights and freedoms.

Jean Lambert MEP, a longstanding campaigner for human rights and a
substitute member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil
Liberties, will be taking part in a session on democracy and liberty.

Jean Lambert MEP said:

"The Government has spent the past decade carrying out a wholesale
assault on our rights and freedoms, from ID cards and the DNA database
to detention without trial and infringements on free speech, but it can
no longer ignore the level of public opposition to its actions. This
Convention is a crucial and timely means of demonstrating our
determination to protect and reclaim those liberties which have been so
unforgivably jeopardised."
