Green Euro MP urges equal treatment for Sikhs

Jean Lambert, the Green MEP for London and long-time human rights campaigner, will address the Annual International Sikh Convention in Wolverhampton on Sunday 14 September 2008.

Around 10,000 Sikhs will attend the Sikh Federation (UK) event, which is the biggest of its type in the West.

As a Member of the South Asia and the India delegations in the European Parliament, Ms Lambert has raised the issue of human rights violations against Sikhs and other minorities in India with her fellow Euro MPs and the European Commission on several occasions.

The Green MEP, who has been awarded for her work on Justice and Human Rights, will speak about the importance of self-determination for the Sikhs – a move supported by the Green Party – and the right to religious expression, including the wearing of the Kara.

Speaking ahead of the event, Jean Lambert MEP commented:

"I am honoured to be taking part in the convention this year and to be welcomed into the Sikh culture and community.

"Everyone should have the right to freedom of thought, religion and belief free from harassment, abuse or discrimination. The right to freedom of religion is recognised in both the European Convention on Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In Asia, and here in the UK, we should all have the right to express our religious beliefs without persecution.

"I urge Sikh organisations to support the new proposed anti-discrimination directive, which will enshrine in law equal treatment for all EU citizens regardless of their faith or belief. This new law requires backing to ensure that it delivers for all disadvantaged communities and reinforces the principle of equality for all.

"Remembering the tragic events that unfolded at the Golden Temple Complex in Amritsar, Panjab almost 25 years ago, I will continue to raise the concerns of the Sikh community in the European Parliament and press for justice for those that have suffered torture and human rights violations."

The convention will take place at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Sedgley Street, Wolverhampton, with speakers from 1-2pm.
