London Citizens gear up to green the capital

London Citizens, the capital’s largest alliance of local civil society groups, will hold their first environmental event this weekend, designed to kick-start green action throughout London’s diverse minority and migrant communities. “London’s Green Future” is expected to attract over 200 people from faith congregations, ethnic associations, schools, student groups and trade union branches.

Jean Lambert, London’s Green MEP, will deliver a keynote speech and will be joined on the platform by representatives from London’s leading community groups. London Citizens consists of around 100 organisations and has run robust and successful social campaigns, most significantly securing Living Wages for many people doing the lowest paid work in London’s economy.

Jean Lambert MEP, said:

"London is a global city and well-placed to understand the links between how we live and its effects across the world. Londoners are also vulnerable to climate change, so we need to take action.

"I want to see London become a leading capital for clean air, renewable energy and sustainable transport. To do that, the environmental message must engage people in all communities, of all ethnic backgrounds, across the entire socio-economic spectrum.

"I welcome the involvement of all community leaders to help create a greener and more enjoyable London. Action at all levels is needed to put pressure on politicians to reduce our impact on the environment. I am hopeful that this London Citizens event will spark a stronger engagement between London’s diverse communities and the environmental movement."

The event will take place from 10-3.30pm in the Sir Alexander Fleming Building at Imperial College on Saturday 17th May 2008. Over 200 people are expected to attend the free event and everyone is welcome. Find out more at London Citizens.
