The call made by Sir Mark Moody Stuart, former Chairman of Shell, for the EU to ban the sale of cars that do less than 35 miles to the gallon, is being supported by Jenny Jones, a Green Party Member of the London Assembly. The move would force car manufacturers to improve the efficiency of many sports cars, which are currently highly polluting. The rule would apply only to new cars, thus allowing the most environmentally damaging to be gradually phased out. Jenny Jones commented: "At last it’s not just environmentalists who are talking sense. Although a switch to greener cars is no substitute for traffic reduction and a switch to public transport, walking and cycling, it is still a positive step forward. Statistics show that Londoners already buy over a third of the country’s smaller engine and less polluting cars, so I’m sure they would embrace this proposal."
