London’s homes hold key to big CO2 savings

New facts revealed today show that the race to cut CO2 emissions from London’s 1.8 million privately owned homes is underway. Jenny Jones, Green Party London Assembly Member, welcomed the start that is being made, but encouraged London’s Mayor to reach all of London’s households as quickly as possible.

"The Concierge Service of the London Green Homes Programme is showing that London’s homes could each cut their carbon emissions by about 2.5 tonnes a year. I am delighted that London’s Mayor adopted this proposal and agreed to include it in the wide ranging budget agreement we made last year."

"There are 1,830,000 owner occupied homes in London. If all of them made the average CO2 savings of a home that has used the Concierge Service, London could save over 4 million tonnes of carbon a year. To reach every privately owned home by 2025, a hundred thousand homes would need to install significant carbon cutting measures every year."

"Such a programme would be hugely ambitious, but the potential is equally massive. It could save around 10% of London’s total emissions. Given the urgent need, any programme that combines the efforts of government and the public so effectively should be delivered as widely and as quickly as possible."

Jenny put the following formal question to the Mayor:

How much CO2 will your green homes programme save in its first year, and how much do you expect it to save in each of the following two years?

Response from the Mayor:

The LDA implementation of the Green Homes programme has commenced with the procurement of the Concierge service for three years and the establishment of a partnership with the Energy Savings trust for the 07/08 financial years. Other aspects of the programme are in development and confirmed CO2 figures are not available until these have been procured for delivery. The following figures are available at this stage. These figures which will contribute to the overall total target of 3.9m tonnes per annum by 2025.
