The Green Party today criticised the decision to illuminate Buckingham Palace for up to 6 hours a night.
Councillor Darren Johnson, Chair of the Greater London Authority’s Environment Committee, said, "Given the urgent need to conserve energy and tackle climate change, we should be turning lights off, not, switching them on."
According to the International Energy Agency, 19% of all electricity is spent on lighting and a large measure of that (as much as 30 per cent) is misdirected into the sky.1
"The Royal Family seem to have a habit of telling us we should all be a lot greener and doing the exact opposite themselves."
Councillor Johnson pointed to a report by The Council for the Protection of Rural England, highlighting the fear that light pollution in the UK has increased by 24% in the past seven years.
