TIME: 10.30 AM

Cllr Darren Johnson AM said, "This is an important election for London. We are fielding a record number of candidates and it is the Greens that are putting forward policies that will ensure high quality public services remain close to where people live. We all have the right in London to have local services within walking distances of our homes such as schools, post offices, shops, libraries transport, dentists and doctors."

London Greens are focussing on the following 10 point plan for London.

1. Put a stop to the closure of our police stations and hospital wards.

2. Have libraries and post offices within walking distance for all.

3. Scrap new road building and switch funds to public transport, cycling and pavement repair.

4. Stop the back-door privatisation of our schools, promote safe routes, and put healthy food on our children’s plates.

5. Promote local youth clubs and community spaces both in their own right and to reverse some of the causes of anti-social behaviour and crime.

6. Protect our local heritage, green space and wildlife from unsustainable development.

7. Enforce energy efficiency for new buildings and invest in 250,000 solar roofs for London.

8. Promote fair trade goods in local shops, and quality, wholesome produce in farmers’ markets.

9. Run social services and housing to ensure equal access for those in most need.

10. Return local democracy to the streets by fostering genuine participation in decisions that affect our everyday lives.

Dr Shahrar Ali, who is standing in Queens Park in Brent East and who also has a starring role in the Green Party local election broadcast said, "It is only the Green Party that listens to local views and then acts. It is vital that we find a way in which people can genuinely engage in the political process."

Sian Berry who lost by just 39 votes in 2002 is determined to become a local councillor in Camden. She is one of the founders of the Alliance against Urban 4x4s, which started in Camden in 2003 and she has recently been nominated for an environmental award for her outstanding campaigning work. Sian said "Our members are getting a fantastic reception on the doorstep in Camden. I believe voters are turning to the Greens because of our proven track record in the London Assembly and European Parliament, and our reputation for working hard and with integrity to provide real solutions to social and environmental problems."
