Jenny Jones Green Party Assembly Member and Deputy Mayor of London joins ‘Mayors for Peace’ delegation in New York

Jenny Jones, Green Party Assembly Member and Deputy Mayor of London, will represent the Greater London Authority on a ‘Mayors for Peace’ delegation to the United Nations in New York on 27th and 28th April.

The delegation, organised to coincide with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Preparatory Committee at the UN, will use a series of meetings to make the case for the worldwide abolition of nuclear weapons.

The delegation is led by the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the only two cities in history to have experienced the devastating effects of nuclear weapons. It will meet UN staff working on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as well as UN disarmament officials.

Green Deputy Mayor, Jenny Jones, who lives in Southwark said,

"The work of Mayors for Peace in seeking the abolition of nuclear weapons is of great importance. London is honoured to work with the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in pursuit of this noble objective. The existence of nuclear weapons is a threat to health of the people of every city in the world – including London."

Mayors for Peace is campaigning for the abolition of all nuclear weapons by 2020 and will be lobbying the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference to be held in New York in May 2005.

The Delegation will meet with UN disarmament officials, NPT officials; representatives of the Non-Aligned Movement; the EU; Pakistan and Israel as well as experts and peace activists over the 27th and 28th April. The Delegation will also visit the September 11 Ground Zero site and New York City Hall, where they will meet with the City Council.

The World Conference of Mayors for Peace was founded by the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1982 ‘ to promote solidarity and co-operation among cities in arousing the collective international will to create a peaceful world free from nuclear weapons.’ It has 548 member cities in 107 countries.

Other cities represented include: Sarajevo, Lahore, Dhaka, Delhi, Lagos, Auckland, Athens and Glasgow.
