To the Editor in waiting,
In November last year you gave a speech in which you warned that “democracy is under threat” and urged us all to “get out there and fight for the things you currently take for granted.” The signatories to this letter are doing exactly what you called for.
One of the things we must never take for granted is the freedom of the press. Indeed, Nelson Mandela once said that “a critical, independent and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy”.
It is inconceivable that as the Editor of the Evening Standard you will be able to uphold this vital role while maintaining your position as a sitting MP with a vested interest in government and parliamentary decisions and how they are portrayed in the media.
We therefore call upon you to either resign immediately as MP for Tatton or as Editor of the Evening Standard.
